Students in three sections of Modern Writing and Literature at Steamboat Spring High School received disposable cameras through a grant from the Legacy Education Foundation. Their assignment was to take photos exemplifying who they are and how they are connected to the people, places and things in Routt County. Students also wrote commentaries about their experiences and photos.
Following is the work of eleven students in Sandy Conlon's class: Annie, Brittainy, Christian, Cody, Hannah, Jesse, Marsh, Thai, Tyler, Will and Zach. These photos and commentaries were selected because they exemplify the unique experience that is growing up in Routt County.
Perhaps Jesse summed it up for the class when he said: "Well, that is my Steamboat Springs, Routt County, Colorado. The places that I go and the people that I live with are all part of my home. There is no place like Steamboat anywhere else in the world. I am extremely grateful that I have grown up in such a great place. The tourists that pass through town may not realize it, but Steamboat is also a place to live, work, play, and grow up in. It is so hard to describe exactly what Steamboat and Routt County means to me, but these pictures are able to describe some of my emotions, memories, and thoughts of this amazing valley. When we first received this project for English, I thought, 'Wow. This will be easy,' because we only had to take twenty pictures to describe our lives in Steamboat. That was exactly what made it hard; I couldn't think of just twenty things that could completely illustrate what this place means to me. It is my home, my work, my memories, my friends, and my life."
