Desired Minimum Qualifications
* Minimum: High School Diploma or GED
* Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or pursuing BA or MA in counseling, education, and/or conservation
* Age: Minimum 17
* Experience working with middle school students preferred
* Demonstrate desire to pursue career field of counseling, education and/or conservation
* Eligible for substitute teaching certification.
* Clean driving record. Clean criminal background check.

Preferred Minimum Skills
* Strong Organizational skills.
* Exceptional skills and knowledge of healthy lifestyles and ability to train others.
* Self-motivated and confident
* Ability to clearly and effectively communicate written and orally.
* Ability to use word processing and graphics programs.
* Flexibility and creativity.
* Comfortable programming a variety of activities for after school hours.
* Ability to work closely in a small team of two within each school.



AmeriCorps Regulations

AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements: Upon successfully completing their terms of service, School Based Mentors will be eligible to receive an Education Award of $4725. Educations awards can be used to pay back qualified student loans and to pay for the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education or the expenses incurred in participation in an approved school-to-work program (not all schools are eligible). Minimum requirements are as follows:
* Minimum age of 17
* Available for 1700 hours of service between dates specified.
* United States Citizen, United States National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States.
* High School Diploma/GED or agreement to work towards a diploma or GED while in the program.
* Intent to serve for the duration of the program.

While performing the duties of this job, the Mentor is frequently required to walk, sit, talk or hear during mettings, class sessions or evaluation sessions. The mentor is occasionally required to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms during community service projects. The Mentor must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities requried by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus for the purpose of reading at a distance and in close. Mentor may be required to carry personal gear and a portion of group gear on assigned service projects.

Mentors will be assigned to a middle school in the Routt County district and will be expected to fully participate in all school functions including physical education classes, traditional classroom sessions, staff meetings and service projects. Mentors may be asked to sit or stand for long periods of time while in an instructional setting.

School Based Mentors spend a significant amount of time in a school-based setting, indoors. While performing the requirments of service projects, the Mentor often works in outside weather conditions including sun, cold, rain and snow. The mentor is potentially exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, and toxic or caustic chemicals such as paint or varnish. Service projects may be physically demanding and may require the use of hand tools such as shovels, rakes or axes. Appropriate training will be given prior to undertaking any project.
