Fun Historical Facts about Steamboat

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

Steamboat Springs was named when French Fur Trappers heard a sound that reminded them of a Steamboat. The sound actually came from the natural mineral springs at the far end of town now named the Steamboat Spring. The sound quit when the railroad was laid.

There are more than 150 springs in the area including Litha Springs, Strawberry Park Hot Springs, the Heart Springs at the Health & Recreation Center, Soda Springs and many on private lands.

Ranching and Agriculture

Plentiful water and fertile floodplain soils have made agriculture an intrinsic part of Routt County's heritage and a defining feature of its picturesque landscape for over a century.

Towns of Routt County

Routt County was created in 1877 and named after John Long Routt, the last territorial and first state governor of Colorado. Today Routt County is the home to nine towns. It's econmic base is mining, ranching, and tourism.
