Kayakers of all abilities will find fun and adventure on the Yampa River. Notable river features on the "Town Run" through Steamboat Springs include the pond for beginners at Fetcher Park, an excellent slalom course in Dr. Rich Weiss Park, and play waves and holes such as the Rabbit Hole, Double Z Wave, Model T Hole, A hole, and the new D Hole. Continuing development of new whitewater features insures that each year's river season will offer new challenges and thrills to playboaters.
The Yampa River Festival has been a locally produced and sponsored event, held the first weekend in June, since 1981. River Festival Events include the Downriver Race, Salmon Slalom (Colorado's only upstream slalom!), Crazy River Dog Contest, River Gumbo Dinner, Silent Auction, and an incredible Kayak Rodeo that features world class competitors from around the US and the world.
A local organization that champions the interests of river users is the Friends of the Yampa. Please call Pete VanDeCarr at (970)879-6249 (or via email at info@backdoorsports.com) to get involved with the river conservation and recreation issues that concern all river lovers.
