The ‘Dog Days of Summer’ takes on a whole new and different meaning this summer. Following in the hoof prints of cows (Chicago), pigs (Cincinnati) and buffalo (Buffalo NY, of course), the Routt County Humane Society (RCHS), has ‘borrowed’ a fundraiser idea that is bringing a bevy of unique and unusual Labrador Retriever dogs to our city. These life-sized fiberglass labs are the painted creations of Colorado artists, sponsored by local patrons and businesses.
This is a multi-faceted project that brings the arts, business, and animal communities together to raise the funds needed to support the animal assistance programs of Routt County Humane Society as well as begin a new fund toward a community dog park. RCHS has worked with the Steamboat Springs Arts Council to gather our local artistic talent and promote these creative artworks throughout the summer at Art in the Park (July 10-11) and the Beaux Arts Festival (August 7). They even paraded down the street on the 4th of July. When the labs are not busy attending functions, you will see them prominently displayed at their sponsor’s place of business, waiting to be admired. They love being the central topic of discussion and they will be working hard to promote their artist’s talents and sponsor’s business.
The Labs were part of a live auction (Park Smalley - Auctioneer) event at Olympian Hall on September 11 (6 - 9 pm). We had a great turnout and all of our Labs found great new homes. You can still see a listing of some of the silent auction items (see link below).
