In 1884, school was first held in a log cabin on the Henry Crawford ranch. Later in 1885 the first school building, which was also log, was established north of town near the cemetery. Later, another log school was built on 3rd and Main streets. It is now a residence. In 1903, a one-story frame school was built across from the old log school and held both elementary and high school students. In 1904, a second story was added because the one story school was too crowded. In 1923 a large two-story brick building was constructed. It was later opened in 1924. According to a Yampa Historian, Hildred Fogg the frame building was torn down and use for lumber to build houses in Yampa. The new brick school housed elementary and high school students until 1952, when they built a new high school on the same campus. When the Yampa and Oak Creek School Districts consolidated, Yampa no longer had a high school. The old high school became a junior high school and the brick building was now for grades 1-5. By 1961, the second floor was condemned. In 1969, the entire building was condemned and it was demolished in 1980, and replaced by modular units.
