The land that is now Phippsburg was settled in the early 1900’s by the Wilson and the Gray families. The town was originally established as a mining town. Also, there were lots of log mills in Phippsburg. Perry bought land from the Wilson family for miner’s houses, and in 19 he built a train to bring miners to his mine in Oak Creek. Perry also shared his mine with Moffat and Phipps. Phipps was a senator for Colorado and was the first owner of the Denver Broncos. Before the town was named Phippsburg, it was called Wilson because of one of the first settling families were the Wilson’s. As soon as the railroad came through Phippsburg, the town became more orientated towards the railroad.
