Winter/Spring 2008

1. “From Memories to Memoirs”

The inside story on how to capture life’s precious moments in writing.

When: Tuesday, January 22nd, NOON - 1 PM
AND repeated from 5:30 - 6:30 PM

Many people are afraid that they don’t have the knowledge or skill to write their autobiography, yet writing a memoir can be a rich and rewarding experience that provides a lasting legacy for family members. “Memories to Memoirs,” taught by Susan de Wardt, will provide simple writing tools and techniques along with abundant encouragement to preserve your personal and family history. Everyone has a story to tell. Don’t wait a moment longer to begin recording your life history.

Writer and Life Coach Susan de Wardt is an energetic speaker and an experienced facilitator of writing process who is recognized for her expertise in journal writing. A six-hour follow up course will be offered to interested participants through a sign up at the 1/22 programs- date TBD.

2. Catch the Spirit of Winter Carnival at the Tread of Pioneers Museum’s Historic Film Night

When: Friday, Feb. 1st at Noon and 5:30 PM (two showings)

and again on Monday, Feb. 11 at Noon and 5:30 PM

Where: Centennial Hall: 10th and Oak Streets, Steamboat Springs

Cost: FREE!!!!

Catch the spirit of Winter Carnival at the Tread of Pioneers Museum’s Historic Film Night. See the 1922 and 1958 Winter Carnival footage and other historic film footage that has recently been preserved and digitized by the Tread of Pioneers Museum. This is a night not to be missed! FREE!

4. “Preserving Your Family Heirlooms”

When: Tuesday, February 19th, NOON – 1 PM AND

Tread of Pioneers Museum staff will demonstrate museum methods for preserving your family's historic clothing, furniture, photos and paper documents. Call the museum at 879-2214 to RSVP for this FREE program.

4. “A Victorian Childhood”

When: Saturday, March 15th, 1:00-2:00 PM

Where: Tread of Pioneers Museum, 800 Oak St.

Cost: FREE!!!

Cat’s Cradle, Jacob’s ladders, yo-yos, jacks, marbles, and more! Learn what it was like to grow up in Steamboat Springs one hundred years ago and have a good old fashioned fun time! Children will see and learn about the historic toys in the museum collection and play with replica historic toys.
For children ages 4 and up.

Festival of Trees
The 13th Annual Tread of Pioneers Museum "Festival of Trees", our joyous holiday fundraiser, runs November 10-19, 2007 (11am-5pm daily). Don't miss this magical holiday tradition. Sponsored by First National Bank of Steamboat Springs and Ace at the Curve. As alwsay, free for all Routt County residents.

The tree decorators, who consist of school groups, organizations and local businesses have been planning their beautiful and creative decorations for months. We usually have around 26 different trees from which the sponsors will choose.
Each year, the Festival includes members and senior events. Call for details.

Olympic Heritage Walking Tour
Every Tuesday from June 26-Sept 4

Meet in front of the Tread of Pioneers Museum, 800 Oak St


This tour will lead participants through the beginnings of Steamboat’s skiing and Olympic tradition and explore Steamboat’s current role in the Olympic Community. Begin at the Tread of Pioneers Museum and meander through downtown to the base of Howelsen Hill, while being introduced to the multiple talents of Carl Howelsen, the history of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club and Winter Carnival, and the importance of Howelsen Hill in the Steamboat Springs community.
Level of difficulty: easy

Mineral Springs Walking Tour
Every Wednesday from June 27-Sept 5

Meet in front of the Bud Werner Library


Visit several of the most important mineral springs in the Steamboat area, including the Steamboat Spring! Learn about the springs’ medicinal qualities and their relevance in the lives of the Native Americans and early settlers, as well as today’s residents and visitors. Participants will also learn how geological forces created the mineral springs. A brochure of the mineral springs is available for more information.

Historic Walking Tour of Steamboat Springs

This tour will focus on Steamboat Springs’ early settlers and historic buildings. Learn about some of the area’s most influential people, such as Carl Howelsen, Margaret Crawford, and Doc Willett. Historic buildings included on the tour are the Old Town Pub, the Pilot Building, and the Pioneer Building. Photographs of these historic buildings will be available during the tour for participants to gain a better understanding of the unique history and importance of these buildings.

Summer 2007 Events:

6/28 - One Stroke Painting Class: Thursday, June 28th, 6:00-9:00pm. $25.
“One Stroke” painting class taught by Charlie Bessken, the artist who creates the gourd ornaments and glasses that we carry in the Museum Store. The class is limited to 12, and the cost is $25 (includes materials). Please call us at 879-2214 to register.

 6/28-29 - The Safety Train: Thursday & Friday, June 28th-29th, departs the Depot at 9:00am, noon and 3:00pm. FREE.
Join the Tread of Pioneers Museum, the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, Union Pacific, and Operation Lifesaver for a ride on the train from the Steamboat Springs Depot to Craig (roundtrip). Each train ride will include a railroad safety talk, and costumed historical characters will be aboard select trains, presenting the history of the Depot, the railroad, Mt. Harris and more.  7/4 - Pioneer Day Block Party: Wednesday, July 4th, 11:00am-1:00pm. FREE.
After the 4th of July parade down Lincoln Ave., come to the Museum and enjoy a free Strings in the Mountains community concert with the Boulder Brass, kids’ activities, refreshments, our famous Routt Beer Floats, and free admission to the Museum.

 8/1 - Lulie Crawford’s Wildflowers & Watercolors Kids Program: Wednesday, August 1st, 11:00am and 1:00pm. FREE.
Lulie Crawford’s character will talk about local pioneer life, growing up in Steamboat Springs, and her wildflower watercolor paintings. Kids will paint or sketch their own wildflower artwork. Please call 879-2214 to register for this FREE program.

 8/24 - Levi’s and Lace Western Gala: Friday, August 24th, 5:30-10:00pm.
Join us at the breathtaking Marabou ranch for a real western heritage experience. Enjoy historical film clips in the Marabou theater, live music, silent and live auctions, fabulous food and beverages, carriage rides and more. Call 879-2214 to purchase your tickets.
