This site is also referred to as the "Stanton Family Cemetery" The families of Henry Stanton and his two sons, Henry Francis and Sam, were some of the early homesteaders in the Hayden area. Henry Sn. was born in Cornwall, England in 1840, his wife Martha Crago was born in Liskard, England on July 5, 1841. They were married in 1860 and came to the United States in 1866. In the spring of 1883, all five children became ill with diphtheria and two of the girls died. They were buried at this site. Members of this family that were buried here include: Minnie, Ernest, Salina, William and Henry Sn. who died in 1890. Ms. Vera Madden is continuing the research of this family.
Others that are buried in the Hayden Pioneer Cemetery include: Joseph Aigner, Robert Brigham, Thomas Hindman, James Ingrum, Adrian Marshall, Ciccely Smith and Katie Smith. Joseph Aigner died in 1887. "Agner " Mountain was named after him. The only obituary that we have found for any one buried here is for A.J. Marshall who died in 1902. He was reported to be 60 years old, but his tombstone gives his age as 69. It states that his home was 5 miles above Hayden. He was a pioneer who came to this county in 1876, and had lived in the Hayden area since 1879. He left a widow and six children. Land records show that this site has passed through many owners. Benj. F. Mason got a homestead exemption in 1891. The patent was not recorded until 1915. Mason sold to Margaret Hooker in 1891. It then was deeded to John McLaughlin in 1893. From 1893 through 1902 there are several transactions between the McLaughlin family. In 1927 it was sold to Wilburn Hockett and in 1951 sold to Thomas Greenbaugh. It was then deeded to Clyde Craig and his estate sold to Edwards. It is currently owned by the Gilroy family. We did not find at any point in time that the Stantons owned this section. They did own land adjoining this site, but not in this section.
Additional research will continue on this site and the families that are buried here.
