Albert B. Ritter was born May 3, 1909 in Idaho Springs, Colorado. Albert, better known as Ab, worked for many years for Larson Transportation Company driving trucks on the Denver to Steamboat Springs route. He considered Steamboat Springs his second home. He and his wife, Marjorie, moved to Steamboat Springs in the late 1930's where he took over as foreman of the trucking company. During the war years Ab and Herb Jacobs ran the Horton service station. Ab took over after Herb entered the service and ran the station until he entered politics and became Undersheriff to Billy Macfarlane when he retired in 1952. He was elected to the position of Sheriff in 1954 and served until 1958. He was defeated for the second term and in 1959 went to work for the Steamboat Springs Police Department as Chief working there until ill health forced him into early retirement. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and also the state Law Enforcement Officers Association. Ab Ritter died on April 4, 1966 and was buried in the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.
