Emory E. Clark was born in 1883, the oldest of ten children of John F. and Georgia Drusilla Smith Clark. Emory frequently finished "in the money" in the early day "bucking contests" (now called rodeo) held around the county. Game and Fish Day was a major event and "bucking contests" were held along with other equestrian events. Emory was considered one of the best of those who either "grabbed gravel" or rode their horses to a standstill. He served for two years as Undersheriff to Amos Chivington. He was elected Sheriff in 1916 and served a two year term. During the campaign he was described as "one of the cleanest and most fearless young men in the county on the ticket". During the election of 1918 he apologized for not campaigning but explained he was busy as he was in charge of the military call-up. He did not win that election.
