Norris W. Brock was born on August 3, 1853 in the province of Quebec, Canada. His parents were Harvey and Hannah Brock. At the age of 17 Norris left home to seek his fortune in the world and during the next two years engaged in farming in Vermont. In 1872 he moved to Boston where he worked at the carpenter trade for 4 years. He then went to Oldtown, Maine and there passed the summer of 1876 in a lumber camp on the Penobscot. In the fall of 1876 he moved on to Colorado and stayed a short time in Georgetown then traveled by foot to Routt County. He found a job on the Smart Brothers Ranch and in 1879 he located his own ranch on the Elk Head. For 4 years he was in partnership with Thomas Iles in a contract for carrying the mail. In 1883 he sold this ranch and settled another which he sold in 1889 to the Carey brothers. Norris Brock was elected sheriff in November 1883 and took the oath of office January 7, 1884 and served through 1885. He then returned to Canada and on March 3, 1886 Norris W. Brock married Anna Wentworth, a native of the province of Quebec, Canada and returned with his bride to Routt County and settled down to ranch life. The ranch produced large quantities of hay, cattle and horses. Norris Brock was quite successful. In 1908 they sold their ranch, "The Brock Place" and moved into town. While Norris resided in Hayden he constructed and sold the first cement block houses ever erected there. In 1913 Mr. and Mrs. Brock, with youngest daughter Bernice, moved to California. Norris W. Brock died in 1915 and is buried at the Mausoleum in Monrovia, California.
