What is Historic Preservation?

Top
Historic Preservation provides the identification and protection of sites, structures, objects, and areas that are important to Routt county’s history and unique character. Some of the benefits to the property owner, developer, residents, and the community derived from the protection and enhancement of historic landmarks include:

Rehabilitation cost for re-use of structures may be less that the cost associated with demolition and new construction.

Tax credit incentives for historic preservation are available at the state and federal level.

Civic pride in the beauty and accomplishments of the past enhanced.

A property gains recognition, and often value, as an important historic resource in the community.

What is Local Historic Designation?

Top
Local designation includes identifying and registering a qualifying historic building, structure, object, or site over 50 years old, with the Routt County Historic Preservation Board. This is the first step in going on to state and national historic designation, if desired.

Local Designation:
Does not affect the use of a structure.
Does not affect interior alterations.
Does not require repairs or restoration.
Does not prevent the owner from painting a designated building.
Does not affect the sale of a property.
