The mission of Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, “Linking community, education and environment through service” drives their programming and organizational objectives. RMYC helps youth and young adults make a difference in themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities and educational experiences. RMYC is part of a network of over 100 youth corps nationwide working to improve communities, the environment and the lives of youth and young adults by putting them to work on public lands and open spaces.
RMYC strives to meet the needs of the community of northwest Colorado by offering long term mentoring for middle school students and summer conservation corps participants. Participants, called corpsmembers, work on crews to complete service projects for multiple city, state, federal and nonprofit agencies.
RMYC is a member of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps and the Colorado Youth Corps Association and is the only accredited youth corps serving northwest Colorado.
The City of Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation Department established Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) in 1993 in response to a demand from the community for more summer job and recreational opportunities for teens and at-risk youth.
Rocky Mountain Youth Corps obtained non-profit status from the IRS in October of 1999. Privatization has allowed for more funding opportunities, a larger geographic area from which to recruit youth and projects, and greater capacity for programmatic changes in response to fluctuating demands.

RMYC provides young adults with comprehensive services to help them develop job skills, work ethic, environmental awareness and healthy lifestyles. Through paid work experience, service to the community and educational services, RMYC helps youth develop the skills they need to succeed in the classroom, the workforce and everyday life. The Rocky Mountain Youth Corps organization encompasses the following elements:
- Conservation Corps:
Currently, the organization operates three Conservation Corps programs: the Backcountry Youth Corps 16-19 year olds; the Colorado Backcountry Corps 18-25 year olds; and the Tribal Conservation Corps 15-19 year olds from the Ute, Arapahoe, and Shoshone tribes of Utah and Wyoming. Crews work on projects ranging from building and maintenance of trails, bridges, and fences to river flood control, and general maintenance of campgrounds and parks.
- Yampa Valley Science School:
In 2000, RMYC staff developed an experiential environmental education school program entitled the “Yampa Valley Science School” in cooperation with several school districts and common interest agencies. The goals of the school are: 1) to provide place-based environmental education through experiential and interactive lesson activities. 2) to link the communities throughout the Yampa Valley through the youth participants. 3) to provide intergenerational links and mentoring opportunities for sixth graders, high school students, college students, and community adults. 4) to foster and encourage integrated academic education with the public school systems.
- Healthy Lifestyles Mentoring Program:
RMYC became a full AmeriCorps Operating Program in January of 2002, implementing school-based and conservation corps-based mentoring programs. School Based Mentoring employs full time AmeriCorps members to mentor middle school students of Routt County. Conservation Corps Mentoring will employ AmeriCorps members to facilitate the educational component of all the conservation corps programs. Partnerships include the South Routt, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs middle schools, Partners in Routt County Mentoring, and a number of agencies providing training services.
- Partnerships
Partnerships have been formed with the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Nature Conservancy, Lift-Up Food Bank, Perry Mansfield Performing Arts Center, Discovery Learning Center, Colorado State Parks, National Parks, Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, Continental Divide Trail Alliance, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, Great Outdoor Colorado, Colorado Youth Corps Association, Youth Crime Prevention and Intervention (through the Colorado Community Partnership Office), Routt and Moffat County United Ways, the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, the Juvenile Diversion Program, Community Evaluation Team, Routt County Probation, Routt County Alcohol and Drug Council, many School Districts and other related agencies.
