Friends of the Routt Backcountry

The Friends of the Routt Backcountry is a chapter of Colorado Mountain Club and is a not-for-profit organization formed to represent the interests of non-motorized winter backcountry users, including skiers, snowshoers and backcountry snowboarders in Colorado. In Steamboat Springs we are working locally to help create and preserve non-motorized areas on public lands working collaboratively with the Forest Service and other user groups. In the past 13 years motorized presence has been steadily increasing and becoming not only a conflict with non-motorized users, but also a safety issue. Since our beginnings in 1998, we have worked with the USFS, State Parks, the Winter Wildland Alliance, and other user groups to create separate use areas for non-motorized winter recreation.
