Yampa River

by Marsh

This past summer was unusually stressful for me. It seemed that I didn't ever really get to relax. This may have had to do with the fact that the Yampa River was closed to swimmers due to the low water level. My friends and I have always spent lots of afternoons cooling off in one of the Yampa's many swimming holes. This year, I missed that privilege a lot and realized just how nice it is to have a clean river running through our town that I can use for recreational purposes. This is one of my favorite spots on the river, ignoring the fact that the sulfur springs are so close, to hang out and relax. This is something that I am able to do less and less as I get older. Nevertheless, I still can find time to take an afternoon dunk. I hope that I can get in some kayaking this summer before the water is too low. I figure that I won't always have that opportunity to live so close to a river like this, so I might as well take advantage of it while I can. Right now I am ready to do rain dances every day so that we can flood this town with moisture. If it is as hot as it was last summer, and I can't swim in the river, I'm going to be in big trouble.

The Yampa River is one of the things in Steamboat everyone can enjoy. There is so much activity going here in the summertime, a person could never be bored. From fishing and kayaking, to swimming and tubing, I was always occupied in the summertime thanks to the Yampa. Tubing was by far my favorite thing to do. When I used to skateboard and BMX, I used to always go swimming in the A-hole, or the Ambulance hole. That was the best place to swim and hang out. This is a picture of the A-hole. Every teen in Steamboat knows how cool this place is on a hot sunny day. You could sit on the rocks and watch all of the tubers passing by, trying to pick out the cute looking girls. Sometimes, we would purposely make their tubes flip, just so we could save them. So many memories are put with this picture, because so much time was spent here growing up.
