Wheeler Grave Site

This site is located on the Tombstone Nature Trail at Steamboat Lake State Park. From Hahns Peak Village go north .4 miles to the Place Cove turn off, follow the signs to the trail head. The graves are marked #5 on the trail map.

The Wheeler family moved to this area in 1921 according to the inscription on the headstone. They homesteaded approximately 243 acres in this area. According to the land records, James E. Wheeler received a homestead exemption in 1927 and obtained patent from the US Government in 1928. It was in this year that they lost their first child. The second child died in 1930. The inscription states that both were "lost at birth & buried here". The children of James & Rose Wheeler were Ruth, born June 20, 1928 and a son named Sonny Boy, born Oct. 6, 1930.

From land records the Wheelers sold the land in 1946 to Barbey. In 1950 Barbey deeded the land to Fetcher. Fetcher held the land until 1972 when it was deeded to the State of Colorado. Most of the original homestead is now under Steamboat Lake. The two graves sit high on a hill over looking the lake.
