This is the burial site of Alma Thresa (Johnson) Omholt. The ashes of her brother, Otto Johnson, were also scattered at this site. The site is visible with a large grouping of rocks and a small temporary metal marker still in place. There is not a fence or sign and no headstone is present.
Alma Thresa Johnson was born October 7, 1878 in Palsja, Helsingborg, Sweden. (Note: Funeral records give her date of birth as Oct. 7, 1880.) She was one of five children born to Paul and Cecilia Johnson. She came to America at the age of fifteen around 1893. Alma married Ole Andreas Omholt, a Norwegian, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ole and Alma with her brother Otto Johnson came to Colorado around 1910. They eventually settled in Routt County, in the Dunkley area.
Otto and Ole set up a mill and built their cabins. Ole's cabin was built with logs set vertical rather than horizontal. He always said that if the world ever flooded, it would float. Otto built his cabin in the standard form with horizontal logs. Through their combined efforts they built two very nice homesteads and also helped the Dunkley community. They worked together at the sawmill and threshing grain.
Alma and Ole had two children. The first was a boy, who died around 1915. He is buried below the corner of the cabin, see Omholt Grave Site two. The second child was a girl named Cecilie, born March 16, 1917.
When Alma died, June 11, 1939, it was her wish that she be buried on top of the hill above the cabin. The funeral was held June 14, 1939 and Alma was interred as she had wished. When her brother died in May 1973 it was his wish that he be cremated and that his ashes be scattered at his sister's grave. Bob Kagie complied with his last request.
The land records show that Ole A. Omholt received a homestead exemption from the U.S. government on 160 acres on July 10, 1918. He received his patent on Nov. 14, 1940. Other transactions included: 1% interest in oil on this land, to John Johnson, Royalty Deeds to Vern Walker and Daisy Grahm dated 1941. Ole sold to Wilma O. Clark in 1950 and Clark sold to Robert Kagie in 1959. The land has recently been sold to the Cross Mountain Ranch.
