2002-2003

Soroco Fifth Grade Outdoor Experience
Students participate in a three-day camping experience along with pre and post camping activities designed to support the fifth-grade science, social studies, language arts, and art curricula.

South Routt Literacy Carnival
The goal of the Literacy Carnival is to provide a fun, free educational activity for students and their parents. Carnival booth activities encourage reading and writing and involve community members. Students can exchange books, publish their own writing, and win prizes.

Yampa River Ecology Project
High school and primary students pair up as study buddies to each other for the academic year to study the ecology of the Yampa River Valley and implement a stewardship project to help our local natural environment.

2003-2004

Routt County ABCs
This is a multi-school book project for elementary students in Hayden, South Routt and Steamboat Springs. Students explore each local region to better appreciate its geography, wildlife, people and history and then share their findings with each other through books and murals. Author Sneed Collard III will present at each school and will guide students through a study of the genre of non-fiction using his ABC book about Montana as a model.

2004-2005

South Routt Elementary School will host the third annual Literacy Carnival on March 24, 2005 from 5 to 7 p.m. It is our hope that by providing a fun, free educational activity for the students and their parents, we can create a community of life-long learners. The Literacy Carnival will be expanding this year to include all students in kindergarten through sixth grades and their families.

Food Guide Pyramid Educational Reinforcement Program
In conjunction with the school lunch program, students will be provided with on-going, age-appropriate, and fun nutrition messages/education to supplement and reinforce the nutrition curriculum currently in place. Students will be given nutrition information items/incentives on a regular basis.

SoRoCo 5th Grade Camp Trip
This is the 15th annual camp trip. The US Forest Service, State Forest Service, Yampatika, 20 Mile Coal Company, and BLM have provided support with personnel and expertise. Hands-on experiences meet standards and are incorporated into year-long curriculum. This experience includes: journal writing, geology, aquatic insects, field sketching of tree/plant life, nature art, wilderness skills, creative writing, forest ecology, astronomy, campfire, lodging, food, hiking.

Steamboat Dance Theatre's Outreach Program
Steamboat Dance Theatre would work within the structure of the physical education class introducing basic dance steps and proper stretching techniques which help the students attain balance, coordination and self control.

Nutrition Services/Food Services Food Guide Pyramid Educational Reinforcement Program
In conjunction with the school lunch program, students in Routt County school districts (Steamboat Springs, Hayden, South Routt) will be provided with ongoing, age appropriate, and fun nutrition messages/education to supplement and reinforce the nutrition curriculum currently in place. Students will be given nutrition information items/incentives such as activity worksheets, lunch bags, erasers, puzzles, bookmarks, etc. on a regular basis.

Food Services Physical Education Curriculum Support Project
In conjunction with the school lunch program, students in the three Routt County school districts will be provided with pedometers in the lunchroom to support the physical education curriculum and to reinforce the important link between healthy eating and exercise in meeting the goal of overall health and wellness for our students.

Oral History Field Study Project
In an effort to connect third grade students in South Routt with the places and people that make the Yampa Valley unique, students will travel to a variety of places throughout their extended community including Dinosaur National Monument, Hahn's Peak, Meeker, Steamboat Springs, Trapper's Lake, Toponas, and Stillwater Reservoir. Funds are for transportation and speaker fees.

Oral History/Field Project
Third grade students travel to Dinosaur, Hahn's Peak, Meeker, Tread of Pioneers Museum, The Carpenter Ranch, and Stillwater Reservoir. They listen to guest speakers at each location. Students also research a topic, interview a community member and give a presentation at Historical Night in May.

Yampa Valley Science School Scholarships
The Yampa Valley Science School serves all Routt County sixth-grade students. The five-day residential program consists of six curriculum units complemented by a community service conservation project. Funds will go to provide scholarships to needy students.

2007-2008

Leadville Glenwood Field Trip
Grant funded a field trip for elementary students to Glenwood Springs and Leadville, including visits to the Fairy Caves, National Mining Hall of Fame, Dexter Cabin and Healy House.

Rock Wall
Funds were used to help provide a rock climbing wall for South Routt Elementary School students similar to the ones in the Steamboat Springs Elementary Schools.

Photographing Our Community

Snowshoes
Snowshoes enable South Routt Elementary School students to participate in a physical education program designed to take physical education students into the forested areas in South Routt County including the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. Students can enjoy healthful physical activity while appreciating the beauty of the local area.

Seventh-Grade Theater Visit to Denver
Soroco Middle School students read and study literature in class then travel to Denver to see live performances of The Telltale Heart, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Necklace, The Monkey's Paw and The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. These plays cover a variety of subjects and expose students to authors such as Edgar Allen Poe, Guy deMaupassant and Mark Twain.

Winter Studies Day
South Routt Middle School students travel to Stagecoach State Park for a variety of experiential educational activities. Students will be able to select from some of the following experiences: snow-shoeing, outdoor art, cross-country skiing, fire building, snow cave building, ice fishing, orienteering, tour of hydroelectric plant, outdoor cooking, etc.

Students learn about local natural areas including fish, wildlife, and vegetation. Routt County's natural ecosystem will benefit from the stewardship projects.

Living Landscapes
This project's objective is to help Soroco Middle and High School art students see their surrounding community with a new and artistic eye. Through the integration of art and drama, students will make use of a variety of photography techniques to capture the historical and contemporary influences and character of their world within Routt County. The project will culminate with a final art show in November in which art students will join with drama students to present a show entitled Living Landscapes. The drama students will be re-enacting various local characters, literally within large framed landscapes created by art students. Funding is for photography equipment and supplies and to pay for bus driver time and mileage.

FBLA Outreach Future Business Leaders of America
Students in Steamboat Springs and South Routt participate in activities together to create a positive relationship between the students in each community. Students in the "ski community" of Steamboat Springs and the "agricultural community" of South Routt create common goals and provide opportunities for social interaction, community service and competitive activities in the area of business.

South Routt Historical Building Project
Soroco High School freshmen will create a GIS-generated map of historical buildings in South Routt County. The map will included both a location and a short description and photograph of each site.

Tri-County Alternative School Expeditionary Learning
At risk students from Hayden, Steamboat Springs and South Routt county schools will come together to participate in a variety of expeditionary activities including a trip to Estes Park for camping, hiking, and a half-day ropes course, a Thanksgiving dinner, a historic field trip (Tread of Pioneers Museum, Howelsen Hill snowshoe trip) and a nature hike/horseback trip near Steamboat Lake.

Beating to Our Own Drum
The Routt County Alternative School will provide twice weekly music lessons to incorporate a connection to the Colorado Content Standards, create a culture of community, and provide an opportunity for the students to showcase their newly developed skills and talents with the community of South Routt. The students will develop a percussion performance for Soroco High School, the Yampa Elementary School, the South Routt BOCES Preschool, and community performance at Decker Park in May 2006 in conjunction with the Soap Box Derby.

Real World Spanish Career Day
Soroco High School will host a career day in which local community members from Steamboat and Craig, who are serving in various careers, will come and talk to Spanish classes about how they have needed their Spanish language skills to succeed or advance in their fields. The purpose of this activity is to help students understand the importance of pursuing a foreign language regardless of changing graduation requirements.

Living Landscapes

SoRoCo High School School-to-Work Day
Students are paired with local businesses to job shadow.

2008-2009

Slab Roller
Funds to purchase a slab roller for High School Ceramics students. Students create bowls to be sold at an ice cream social in the spring. Funds raised benefit the art department. Clay artisans from Steamboat Springs will come to the school to demonstrate techniques. Some have also donated pieces of art for a silent auction at the ice cream social.

2009-2010

Hi & Lo Ropes Course at YMCA Rockies
Funds will help send a mixed group of high school special education and leadership students to the ropes course at Snow Mountain Ranch. The purposes of this activity are to build self confidence and teamwork that will help students in the classroom and to connect students with learning disabilities with the greater student body.

Physical Fitness/Outdoor Education
Funds will be used for equipment to set up a Frisbee golf course as well as badminton and shuffleboard equipment. The purpose is to get students involved in outdoor physical activity not normally available to them.
