H Is for Hayden Second grade students at Hayden Valley Elementary School created an alphabet book depicting local mammals, historical figures, physical characteristics, resources, community changes and current points of interest to the Hayden community. Students researched, took pictures, wrote narratives and then printed, bound and distributed the books.

 

 

Hayden Valley Elementary School


2002-2003
Critter Control Mission
A camera, film, developing, and maps support this multi-age Community Mapping project at Hayden Valley Elementary. Students collect and map data to help the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Colorado Highway Patrol implement solutions to the problem of wildlife being killed along US Highway 40 near Hayden.

Mini-Society
Third-grade students at Hayden Valley Elementary develop their own business operations, design services, manufacture products, and sell these products and services to their classmates.

2003-2004
H is for Hayden: A Yampa Valley Alphabet Book
Students will create an alphabet book depicting local mammals, historical figures, physical characteristics, resources, community changes and current points of interest to the Hayden community. Students will research, take pictures, write narratives and then print, bind and distribute the books.

Routt County ABCs
This is a multi-school book project for elementary students in Hayden, South Routt and Steamboat Springs. Students explore each local region to better appreciate its geography, wildlife, people and history and then share their findings with each other through books and murals. Author Sneed Collard III will present at each school and will guide students through a study of the genre of non-fiction using his ABC book about Montana as a model.

2004-2005
Food Guide Pyramid Educational Reinforcement Program
In conjunction with the school lunch program, students will be provided with on-going, age-appropriate, and fun nutrition messages/education to supplement and reinforce the nutrition curriculum currently in place. Students will be given nutrition information items/incentives on a regular basis.

Hayden Valley Elementary Outdoor Adventure Club
This summer school program includes: physical fitness (hiking and swimming) , GPS technology, map reading, outdoor survival skills, observation and identification of local plants and animals and natural habitats, appreciation for local history and environment, teamwork and cooperation skills, identification and location of noxious weeds for the Extension Office in exchange for using their GPA units and help with computers and photo editing, extension to middle school, photo books, camping.

Mini-Society
Hayden Valley Elementary grant funded materials and activities for the Mini-Society program.

2005-2006
Steamboat Dance Theatre's Outreach Program
In conjunction with the school lunch program, students in Routt County school districts (Steamboat Springs, Hayden, South Routt) will be provided with ongoing, age appropriate, and fun nutrition messages/education to supplement and reinforce the nutrition curriculum currently in place. Students will be given nutrition information items/incentives such as activity worksheets, lunch bags, erasers, puzzles, bookmarks, etc. on a regular basis.

Food Services Physical Education Curriculum Support Project
In conjunction with the school lunch program, students in the three Routt County school districts will be provided with pedometers in the lunchroom to support the physical education curriculum and to reinforce the important link between healthy eating and exercise in meeting the goal of overall health and wellness for our students.

A Vision of History
Hayden Valley Elementary art teacher will receive funds to provide art materials to be utilized in conjunction with a project involving a field trip to the Carpenter Ranch as a way to help students appreciate the ranch as a source of historical information concerning agriculture and its benefits to the Yampa Valley.

2006-2007
Books Bridging Continents
Hayden Valley Elementary students collaborated with community members to collect books to send to a village in the Solomon Islands.

A Vision of History Revisited
First and second grade students spent a half day at The Nature Conservancy's Carpenter Ranch where they participated in history, writing and art activities.

Class Act Productions
Hayden Valley elementary, middle and high school students worked with community members to produce the play Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Funds helped fund a curtain, sound system and lighting.

2008-2009
Bull Session
The funds will help compensate cowboy poets/entertainers for speaking fees, lodging and travel expenses. Each of the entertainers will perform original and traditional pieces relating to our western heritage and rural living. Funds are to be used to ensure that the entertainers will be able to perform in the Hayden Valley Elementary and Middle Schools.

Cooking Bridging Countries and Continents
Funds for recipe books and cooking supplies. First grade students participate in a cooking project six times during the year. They will put together a recipe booklet, read it and follow the steps to make a healthful snack for the week. Lessons are tied to theme and literacy units. Students will share recipes and the supplies to make the snacks with a class in a school on the island of Gizo in the Solomon Islands.

Literacy Carnival
Funds to help meet expenses for a Literacy Carnival. Hayden Valley Elementary School hosts a Literacy Carnival in November. Students hear storytellers during the school day. In the evening, students and their families celebrate the joy of literacy by hearing storytellers and participating in games and activities.

Mini Society
Mini-Society teaches both macro and micro economics. Students integrate math, reading, and language skills as they plan and organize a business operation. They experience hands-on economics education by creating, advertising, and selling products to consumers. Students learn to make decisions about the cost, quality, production, and supply/demand of their goods in connection with their potential consumers. The grant is for supplies.

Outdoor Adventure Club
The Adventure Club includes hikes and beginning concepts for elementary students in third through fifth grades and challenging hikes with more advanced content for the sixth through eighth grades. The Adventure Club mission is to introduce students to a healthy, lifetime activity, develop a thirst for knowledge, and help them gain an appreciation for the outdoor environment in which they live.
 


Hayden Middle School

2005-2006
Steamboat Dance Theatre's Outreach Program
Steamboat Dance Theatre would work within the structure of the physical education class introducing basic dance steps and proper stretching techniques which help the students attain balance, coordination and self control.

2006-2007
Landmarks and Landscapes of Hayden: Fine Art Prints
Hayden middle and high school students created original prints of Hayden landmarks or landscapes. The prints will be collected and given to the high school, public library and Hayden Heritage Center. Additional prints will be sold to help sustain the project. Funds helped purchase a new printing press and supplies for the project.

Hayden Beautification
On National and Global Youth Service Day, all Hayden Middle School students and teachers participated with community volunteers in activities to beautify Hayden. Students wrote reflection papers, completed an evaluation and documented the project with photographs and a PowerPoint presentation.

Yampa Valley Science School Scholarships
The Yampa Valley Science School serves all Routt County sixth-grade students. The five-day residential program consists of six curriculum units complemented by a community service conservation project. Funds will go to provide scholarships to needy students.

Hayden High School

2005-2006
Tri-County Alternative School Expeditionary Learning
At risk students from Hayden, Steamboat Springs and South Routt county schools will come together to participate in a variety of expeditionary activities including a trip to Estes Park for camping, hiking, and a half-day ropes course, a Thanksgiving dinner, a historic field trip (Tread of Pioneers Museum, Howelsen Hill snowshoe trip) and a nature hike/horseback trip near Steamboat Lake.

2006-2007

2009-2010
Authentication the Artistic Experience

The project is designed to provide students with cameras so they can go into the greater Hayden community to photograph people, places and events that can be used as sources in their art work. At least one assignment in the Two-Dimensional Arts class will be specific to learning about topics of interest within the Yampa Valley/Routt County area and will require visual images to be used in the creation of a meaningful piece.
