The Northwest Colorado Cultural Heritage Tourism effort was initiated by a partnership of the Routt County Economic Development Cooperative along with collaborative partnerships with Yampa Valley Partners; Historic Routt County; The Community Agriculture Alliance and Yampa Valley Economic Development Council in 2004.
The primary purpose of gathering communities was to conduct a preliminary assessment of the potential of a regional cultural heritage tourism program in Northwest Colorado that encompasses the counties of Rio Blanco, Moffat and Routt, includes the communities of Meeker, Rangely, Dinosaur, Maybell, Craig, Hayden, North Routt/Hahns Peak, Yampa, Phippsburg/Oak Creek, and Steamboat Springs. In 2008 the Community Agriculture Alliance (CAA) took over the leadership and the fiscal agency of the project and expanded the region to include Jackson County and the town of Walden.
The CAA was granted a Colorado Tourism Heritage Program grant in the fall of 2008 to achieve three key objectives in the initial phase of cultural heritage tourism development in Northwest Colorado; 1) Heritage site inventorying and visitor readiness assessment, 2) interpretive planning and 3) marketing product development. Marketing product development will include creation of a brand for the regional program, brochure/collateral materials including trip itineraries and maps and creation of a Website. Anticipated outcomes of the project will diversify our preeminent industry of tourism through increased market share of Cultural and Agri-tourism customers spending that will directly benefit local economies throughout the region.
