
Mawuenyega Mensah resides in Boulder, Colo., where he performs and teaches traditional and social African drumming and singing. He is the musical director and master drummer of Logo Ligi, an African music and dance ensemble. Additionally, he teaches at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Naropa University. Mawuenyaega is an extraordinarily talented performer and choreographer with a broad repertoire of pan-African rhythms. He has taught extensively to students from many different countries.
Born into an artistic family in Ghana, West Africa, Mawuenyega began drumming at the age of five. At ten years old he joined the West African Folkloric Troupe to study under world-renowned West African musical icon, Mustapha Tettey Addy. Soon thereafter, Mawuenyega became master drummer of the Akrowa Dance Ensemble of Ghana. He later joined London's premier pan-African troupe, Adzido Pan-African Dance Ensemble, which enabled him to perform and tour extensively throughout Europe. All of these experiences serve as an impetus for Mawuenyega's immense repertoire and provide him with the rare ability to work and teach with diverse musicians and dancers.
